This is an experimental warfare class strategy game. The planet's many nations are no longer at war with eachother, but in a distant land, a battle is still raging. This battle pits anyone who wishes to fight - in a mission to develop the best strategy and technology in order to defeat any enemy. After centuries of peace and prosperity, war loving peoples of the human race have decided to create a volunteer war zone, in which killing is not only legal, it's your life. Not surprisingly, this has contributed to a reduction to instability and crime on the rest of the planet.
The "war zone" country is large, with many varying land types, and many islands of varying sizes. Humanity has been visited by aliens, who have also joined in on the fun. Since the battle is one of life and death, they have created small temporary alliances, and developed a huge variety of technology. War tech is a booming industry for the people of Earth, as alien factions are constantly at war millions of light-years away, and are always looking for that extra edge in battle. However, things often go wrong in the war zone, and many times, it has made itself a threat to the entire planet.
Although the war zone was created mainly as a way to develop and test military-high-technology, others have also settled there, as it is a vastly uninhabited land mass. There are populations of ancient migratory tribes, strange mutant beasts, people with unbelieveable abilities, aliens of all shapes and sizes, artificial intelligences, inventors who wish to be left alone in a lawless environment to carry out their research, as well as a bunch of war zone protestors, bent on foiling the plots of the warriors and convincing them to give up on war altogether.
There is a vast and complex system of spy operations and secret black market deals running constantly. Some people are just in it to produce weapons, some are just in it to train people, and some are just in it to watch. Although it would be nice to know exactly who you're fighting at all times, this just isn't possible in a land where guerilla tactics reign supreme. Just make sure you aren't fighting your own people!
